The Nines to Open in Fall 2008
The Nines Hotel

A 331-room Luxury Collection Hotel (Starwood Hotels & Resorts) is scheduled to open in downtown Portland, Ore., this fall. Known as The Nines, the hotel will occupy the top nine floors of the historic Meier & Frank Building; a stylishly renovated Macy’s department store fills the building’s lower five levels. A key component of the $133 million project is converting the top floors of the former department store from a solid box to a hollow square. The creation of this atrium will give all of the guest rooms – even those on the interior – access to a view and natural light.

The hotel’s plans also call for a glass-roofed lobby, a rooftop lounge, a 7,000-square-foot ballroom, and 7,000 square feet of additional conference, meeting and banquet facilities. An elevator lobby on the Morrison Street side of the building will provide dedicated access to the eighth floor’s grand lobby. The project’s developer, Sage Hospitality Group, is seeking LEED Silver Certification for the hotel from the U.S. Green Building Council.

OMSI: First Science Museum to Earn Salmon-Safe Certification
Salmon Safe logo

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), which overlooks Portland’s Willamette River, has become the first science museum in the country to be awarded Salmon-Safe certification. This certification follows an extensive on-site assessment to verify that OMSI is designed and managed to protect water quality and fish habitat. To qualify, OMSI met rigorous conservation requirements, including reducing water use in landscaping, reducing and managing fertilizer use through the development of an integrated pest management program, and incorporating salmon-friendly design in all future site development.

Founded in 1944, OMSI is one of Oregon’s most popular attractions. The museum offers five exhibit halls with hands-on exhibits, a planetarium, an OMNIMAX Theater and the USS Blueback submarine, which is moored in the Willamette River. OMSI is located at 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland, Ore. 97214; 503.797.4000; www.omsi.edu.
